Julian B Lane Waterfront Park Revitalization

One of the largest projects, not only in NHP, but in Tampa as a whole, is the revitalization of our very own Julian B Lane Park. The park contains over 25 acres and is one of the largest waterfront parks in the nation. For a size comparison, it is five times the size of the wonderfully revitalized Curtis Hixon Park.

The city, the parks and recreation committee, and Civitas, a high-end landscape architecture firm based out of Denver, have been working together with the community for over two years on the plans for Julian Lane's revitalization. With much community input, these plans are finally complete. The final draft was revealed in a public workshop in February. The plans contain a 15,000sf state of the art boat house with second story event space. A portion of the sea wall will be cut back, into the park, to open the park up to the river. There will be a floating dock to launch kayaks, paddleboards, and dock boats. There will be new basketball courts, tennis courts, and a children's play area as well as a full size turf multi-sport field. There will be a massive green adjacent to the boathouse for concerts and events and will serve to open the entire park to the river and the view of downtown just across the way. Last, but not least, Laurel St will be re-positioned to hug closer to the Interstate, providing even more space to be utilized within the park.

The groundbreaking ceremony was to be held April 2nd with an ambitious completion date set a short 18 months but has since been postponed to a more vague start date of 'Spring 2016'.

This is an extremely exciting time for the area West of the River as this is a major piece that affects how we interact with the river. The revitalization of this park has the potential to truly bring downtown West of the River.
